Andrew has lectured and tutored the Masters Course at Plymouth University. He holds the position of RIBA Chairman for the Exeter Region 2018 - 2020.
Andrew’s Masters Thesis was written in Italy and involved reasearch into the conversion of histotric buildings with contemporary interventions in Venice, Verona, San Vito and Treviso. The Master of Architecture and Conservation of Historic Buildings course were tutored by several leading UK architects at the time including Richard Feilden, Bob Allies and David Shelev. Having designed the Tate Gallery in St Ives, Professor Shalev was an insightful and highly skilled architect from which to learn. A rich contextual understanding of architecture and sustainability and how light and space can be captured and enveloped by different construction materials has been developed through research and study at Plymouth, Bath University and l'ecole d'architecture de Bordeaux in South of France, Barcelona and in Lisbon Portugal in particular, researching and understanding famous bespoke houses and public buildings.
This insight into creating inspiring beautiful buildings in the context of the Mediterranean has given Andrew a rich and varied understanding of design to apply to bespoke contemporary, vernacular and commercial architecture in the UK, throughout Europe and abroad. Andrew has many architectural friends and contacts in these countries and is fully supported with IT from which to collaborate for over seas projects.
An understanding in design from concept to detail through research and development has cultivated an award winning portfolio of different commercial building types that include bespoke housing, Primary & Secondary Schools, Colleges of Further Education, Police Stations, Data Centres, High Street Banks, Mixed use developments of housing both market rate and affordable, retail and industrial. Many sites involved the creative re-use of Historic and listed Buildings of Grades 2, 2* and 1 class order.
Andrew has an interest in working towards passivhaus standards, low carbon design, sustainable and ecological design in public and private sectors has cultivated an interest in the life cycle cost and analysis of the buildings future use. Regionalism, landscape and location are also key to unlocking design perameters in which to work.
Best practice detailing is critical to the survival of the buildings fabric and longlevity which Andrew backs with an Architects Certificate of warranty. Materials are sourced locally and sustainably where possible. It is also important to consider the flexibility of future use and lifetime homes philosophy for the disabled and elderly in every scheme. Architecture should be a balance of poetry and low energy plumbing. The beauty forged through light and space must inspire the emotion of happiness as we use it in our daily lives and increase the value of our property through exceptional architectural design.
