New Contemporary Exmouth Dwelling gets A-A rating:

Andrew Long Architects are extremely pleased with the A-A rated Energy Performance Certificate for our new low energy house in The Avenues, Exmouth.

 

The design has just been approved at Building Regs Stage by East Devon District Council and we look forward to getting it started on site, along with other exciting projects this spring.

Planning Permission Granted!

First New Passivhaus Dwelling in The Avenues, Exmouth

 

Andrew Long Architects were appointed for a full professional RIBA design and project managed service for a new 4 bedroom low energy dwelling in the historic Avenues setting of Exmouth, in a large garden site of an existing historic dwelling. Using the 5 main principles of the Passivhaus concept, the dwelling is south facing with large areas of glazing, high levels of insulation in the external envelope and airtightness detailing, mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery, woodburning stove as secondary heating. It balances cost return against heat output which can save up to 90% on energy bills.

 

The site is self supporting in infrastructure with on site package treatment plant and sustainable drainage systems. The landscape has been sensitively designed to encourage biodiversity with Devon earth banks for re-use of soil from the foundations, bat and bird boxes and local indigenous species of planting. It will be built by the local community and gained support by The Local Residents Association and East Devon District Council by way of Pre Application Feedback prior to gaining planning approval. It had no objections from local residents, Parish Council, neighbours or the Planning Officer and went straight through the planning process under delegated powers with full support.

Extension & Alterations to a Grade II Listed Building, Ottery St Mary, East Devon.

 

 

Andrew Long Architects have been appointed to carry out the alterations and extension to a grade 2 Listed farm house dating to 1460. The scheme involved the extension, thermal upgrading and new construction of existing insensitive extensions that had fallen into disrepair.

 

Though the historical analysis and research of old photographs and OS maps, the aim was to recreate the form of pitched historic out-buildings long since demolished as part of the planning strategy and create contemporary annex living spaces that were sustainable, thermally efficient and air tight. The contrasting new design tells a story of the past and present in the context of the grade 2 listed farm house dwelling which dates to circa 1460.

 

The service involved assessing the existing historic fabric, the reasons for damp and structural disrepair and the proposal of a low energy contemporary extension with high quality materials and best practice detailing for air tightness to mitigate damp and create a warm light and airy air tight set of living spaces overlooking the beautiful lake and gardens of the 14 acre estate.
